106-yr-old wins battle for justice

Singh Kohli, the endless wait for rectification of discrepancies in his
pension seems to be finally over.

Kohli, who retired from the Army on July 29, 1949, has been drawing a
pension of Rs 2,373, including a basic of Rs 1,275, which is less than
that of a sepoy. Among the oldest surviving soldiers to have served in
British and later Indian Army, controller of defence accounts pensions
(CADP), Allahabad, has assured Kohli that his pension discrepancies will
be sorted out.

Zilla sainik welfare officer Pune, Lt. Col. Shirish Karasgi (retd), who
took up the matter with the CDAP, after Kohli's granddaughter Gurvinder
approached him last year, told TOI, "Kohli's case has been listed for
the defence pension adalat, scheduled for June 21 and 22, in Pune."

"This is a unique case for a person of his age. It will be a great
motivation for others, including war widows, who have been running
around to get their dues," Karasgi said. Once rectified, Kohli will draw
a basic pension of Rs 3,725, in addition to the dearness payment and
relief, he said. Officials at the sainik welfare office said that with
the correction, Kohli's consolidated pension will be over Rs 5,300 per
month.
