Grossly short-staffed, labour commissionerate fights labour problem

Pune, January 16 The Regional Labour Commissionerate in Pune finds itself short-staffed, with its four employees grappling to deal with labour dispute cases from across eight districts of Maharashtra. The repeated requests for more personnel have yielded no results.

Government holidays mean an additional few hours to attempt finishing work in the regional labour commissioner’s office at Shankarsheth Road and Makar Sankranti that fell on Tuesday saw commissioner N H Ahmad in his office poring through bulky files and dictating a case application.

Accidents kill 3 daily in Pune

PUNE: Road accidents, on an average, claim at least three lives every day in Pune district, and 1,170 people were killed under the Pune rural police and Pune city police jurisdictions in 2007.

Consider this. A total of 796 people lost their lives in 3,616 mishaps in the jurisdiction of the Pune rural police last year. The number of fatal accidents was 759 in the 3,609 accidents reported in 2006 in rural areas. Of these, around 70 per cent were serious accidents where victims received severe injuries.

DNA launches in Pune

In line with its recent expansion into the Gujarat market and having consolidated its market position in Mumbai, DNA, the fastest growing newspaper has now launched in Pune.

K U Rao, CEO, DNA, says "In line with strategy to become the dominant player of Western India, DNA has expanded to Pune after Gujarat and in markets where we operate, we intend to be the leader both in circulation and revenue."

Rao further states that the overall target is to make DNA a Rs 1000 crore company by 2011 and the Pune edition would give around 10 percent of that number.

Tata plans to create independent production hubs

Pune: Tata Motors, India's largest vehicle maker, is considering the creation of independent production hubs that will focus on making different vehicles at different locations.The company has a market share of 31.2% in the multi-utility vehicles segment and 6.4% in the luxury car segment. Worldwide it is ranked among the top ten in the manufacture of vehicles in the range of 5-15 tonnes. It manufactures heavy commercial vehicles (HCV), light commercial vehicles (LCV), passenger cars and multi-utility vehicles.

Land owners in a tizzy over CM order

PUNE: Chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh’s recent ruling restricting the grant of Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) for the Parvati hill plot to four per cent instead of the earlier 100 per cent has sent "green plot" owners in the city into a tizzy. This move opens the door to acquisition of 978.54 hectares of privately-owned hill land in Pune at a throwaway price.

The CM’s decision overrules the state advocate general’s opinion and surprises many, particularly since a writ petition on the quantum of TDR to be granted to green plot owners is pending before the Bombay HC.

Roses surge ahead of Valentine's Day
