After initial hiccups, IISER enrols 100 per cent admissions

PUNE: Ever since the inception of the Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) in 2006, only about 40 to 50 per cent of the total enrolments had managed to take place. However, the academic year 2010 has seen 100 per cent admissions denoting a rise in interest among students for pure sciences.

A A Natu, admissions head at IISER, Pune, said, "Initially, we were worried about filling up the seats. The first year had seen only 45 per cent enrolments. But, last year and this year has been really good as far as admissions are concerned."

AIIMS chief on search panel for new MUHS V-C

Pune university V-C keeps his date with engineering students

Pune : The Vice-Chancellor, University of Pune, (UoP) RK Shevgaonkar has kept his promise to continue teaching during his tenure as V-C. He has started taking lectures at College of Engineering, Pune (CoEP) and will continue teaching for the first semester, taking 45 lectures. He is the first V-C to teach in a college while holding the post.

Online exams: test to avoid human error

Pune : In a bid to bring more transparency in the examination system and minimise human error, the engineering wing of the University of Pune conducted online papers for three subjects of first year course for the first time. This has helped in declaring the results of first year engineering students just in 40 days after the examination. The results of the examination that was conducted from June 11 to 17 will be out on Monday.

In the backdrop of IT companies in Pune mulling a pact to curb attrition, a study has revealed that rate of attrition in Pune is one of the highest in the country. A recent study by recruiting firm TeamLease points out that in the last one year, Pune, along with Delhi, recorded the highest attrition rates compared to Bangalore or Hyderabad.

4 institutions in city move HC against AICTE

PUNE: Admissions to engineering and MBA/MMS courses in the state are in for some more delay as four Pune-based institutions on Wednesday filed a petition in the Bombay high court challenging the All India Council for Technical Education’s (AICTE) move to withhold their letters of approval (LOAs) to start new colleges from 2010-11.

The council had named these institutions in the list of the newly approved colleges for the 2010-11 academic year, which was released on June 14 and 29. However, it has now withheld LOAs on the grounds of ‘incomplete data’.

Officials misinterpret best-5 rule for ICSE students, to re-process forms

Pune : Only two days remain for applying for class XI admissions and the Pune division of the state education department has messed up the process for the Indian Council for Secondary Education (ICSE) students. The department has to re-process around 400 applications following a misinterpretation of the best-five formula for these students.

CAP panel to release Std XI admission plan today

PUNE: The much-anticipated plan for Std XI admissions in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad will be announced by the centralised admission process (CAP) panel here on Thursday.

A core group of the CAP panel, headed by deputy director (education) Sunil Magar, met here on Wednesday to finalise the admission plan.

Authorities at the office of deputy director (education) were waiting for the state government's guidelines relating to implementation of the admission scheme in the wake of the Supreme Court's interim order on Tuesday, extending the best-five policy to ICSE students too.
