Pune University stays external students’ admissions in colleges

Pune : The University of Pune has stayed the external admissions to first year arts and commerce streams in colleges affiliated to it. The decision comes in the backdrop of strong exceptions taken by non-teaching staff and principals of colleges, who conveyed to the university that they could not bear the extra load.

No principals in 342 colleges, varsity to allow 10% more seats in others

Pune The University of Pune (UoP) has opted to allow its arts, commerce and science colleges that have full-time principals to admit 10 per cent more students. This could translate to over 10,000 more seats when 342 colleges without full-time principals are not allowed to carry out admissions this year.

Mumbai, Latur students top scorers in state

PUNE: Girish Kotecha of Latur and three Mumbai students Anish Biwalkar, Shronit Ladani and Rahul Dubey scored an identical 199 out of 200 marks to emerge top scorers in the physics, chemistry and mathematics (PCM) group in the MHT-CET 2010, results of which were declared on Monday.

In the physics, chemistry and biology (PCB) group, the top score in the state was shared by Latur's Sarika Solanke as well as Mumbai's Keyur Desai and Deven Kuruwa all three securing 198 out of 200 marks. Akshay Rajiv Kulkarni of Latur followed the trio with 197 marks.

School exams to stay: minister

PUNE: Minister of state for school education Fauzia Khan on Friday said that talk about there being no exams till Std VIII was "false propaganda".

"There will be exams," she emphasised. "Only, the evaluation system has changed from the end-of-the-year exam to a continuous comprehensive evaluation (CCE) that tests a student’s understanding, reading, writing and presentation skills."

Parents protest against fee hike

PUNE: Over 200 parents gathered outside the Rosary School in Pune Cantonment on Thursday morning in protest against the fee hike without notice. The parents demanded that the school officials discuss the issue with them.

"We waited for three hours, but the school officials did not turn up. In fact, they had asked for police protection and were only sending messages through the police. Nobody came face-to-face and spoke to us. All we want to know is the reason for this fee hike," said Shekhar Bhikule, a parent.

Stir to demand better facilities for ayurvedic docs, students

PUNE: The National Integrated Medical Association (NIMA), Pune district branch, will soon stage a protest at the Pune collectorate to demand better facilities and rights for ayurvedic doctors and students specialising in the discipline.

Five Pune students top division

PUNE: Students from the city topped the Pune division in SSC exam in mathematics, social sciences, Marathi, Gujarati and Sanskrit subjects this year.

Manasi Shinde of Renuka Swaroop girls high school scored full marks (150) in mathematics. “I expected these marks. During prelims, I had a similar score and so my confidence level was up,” she said.

Action against colleges sans heads

PUNE: The University of Pune (UoP) has warned that it will go ahead with the plan to ban admissions for the academic year 2010-11 at those affiliated colleges and recognised institutions, which have not appointed full-time approved principals/directors.

“We are issuing a fresh reminder tomorrow to all colleges and institutions that are running without the key appointees in place,” Wasudev Gade, director of UoP’s board of college and university development (BCUD), told TOI on Monday.

Pune division SSC pass percentage is 83.94

PUNE: Girls once again outshone boys in the Secondary School Certificate (SSC) examination in Pune division of the Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, results of which were declared online today.

A total of 2,12,233 students passed in Pune division, comprising three districts--Pune, Ahmednagar and Solapur.

The overall pass percentage of girl students in pune division has been recorded at 86.92 and boys at 81.61.

The Ahmednagar district recorded highest pass percentage of 88.96, followed by Pune district 83.25 and Solapur 79.97.

Only 241 kids deprived of edu in district: ZP

PUNE: If the Pune Zilla Parishad is to be believed, only 241 children are deprived of school education in the entire district. Moreover, a mere 38,476 children between 6 and 14 years are seeking admission to schools across Pune district.

The hard-to-swallow statistics came up in the course of a news conference to announce a school enrollment fortnight organised by the education department (primary) of the Pune Zilla Parishad. The drive will be conducted between June 14 and 30.
