Interim fee hike for engg colleges

PUNE: A 7.5 per cent hike over last year's tuition fee for the engineering degree course has been permitted by the state-appointed Shikshan Shulka Samiti for the academic year 2007-08.

However, not all the 164 engineering colleges in the state will be able to charge the new fee. The hike comes with a rider that only those colleges which got their fee for 2006-07 finalised by the Samiti can charge the new fee.

ABVS starts help centre for students

PUNE: Stung by the Pune police’s warning of externment orders against politicians engaged in browbeating educational institutions during the admission season, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Sena has threatened that it will soon come out with fact-based irregularities at some institutions while effecting admissions.

Addressing a news conference on Friday, ABVS Pune city chief Ajay Shinde announced the launch of a ‘Help Centre’ for students and their parents encountering admission-related problems.

Poonawalla’s Serum Institute may go public to raise Rs 500 crore

MUMBAI/PUNE: The Dr Cyrus Poonawalla-owned Serum Institute of India (SII), the country’s largest exporter of vaccines and immuno-biologicals, and flagship of the Poonawalla Group of companies, may soon go public.

According to a source close to the development, the Pune-based company is expected to come up with a draft red herring prospectus by the beginning of next year. This could be one of the largest IPOs in the pharma sector, as the company is planning to raise around Rs 500 crore. According to a person close to the development, Enam Financial is advising the company on the issue.

Maharashtra SSC result shows upward trend

Pune, June 26 (PTI): Surpassing the pass percentage in the last two years, 70.59 per cent students were today declared successful in the Secondary School Certificate examination of the Maharashtra board held in March 2007.

Of 16,43,886 students who sat for the Class X examination in eight divisions of the state, 11,60,425 cleared it.

Keeping up the tradition, Latur division of the state secondary and higher secondary education board once again registered the highest passing percentage at 77.12 per cent.

Free uniform, books for PCB kids

PUNE: All students in the six primary schools run by the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) will henceforth be provided with free uniforms, books and medical check-up twice a year and reference to special treatment if needed.

This is part of a new policy on education and schools introduced by the board with effect from this academic year.

The PCB has six primary schools functioning under its education branch besides four high schools in Pune Camp. Around 2,500 students in the primary schools, who are mostly from poor socio-economic backgrounds, will benefit from this scheme.

Admission at five engg colleges begin on June 9

Pune, June 8: THE centralised admission procedure to the first year at five autonomous engineering colleges in Pune, Mumbai, Nanded and Sangli will begin on June 11, on completion of the counseling sessions for these institutes on June 9 and 10.

1.05 lakh from Pune clear HSC

PUNE: In the HSC exam results declared on Friday, Shraddha Dashrath Vaichaal of B.P. Sulakhe Junior College, Barshi, Solapur, topped the 'minimum competence vocational courses' stream with 89.17 per cent (535 marks).

In the 'backward classes' category, Swami Umesh Prakash of Dayanand College, Solapur, emerged topper with 91.67 per cent (550 marks).

Konecranes sets up engineering centre in Pune

Finland-based Konecranes, a leader in lifting devices, has set up an engineering centre in Pune to serve as a global interface for design and other services between its customers and manufacturing facilities.

The $2 billion company also said it has chosen New Delhi for its next annual conference where 170 top executives from 20 countries and members of the board will deliberate over four days from Wednesday on future strategies.

Pune scores 99 pc success in CBSE

PUNE: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE)-affiliated schools in and around the city reported a healthy 99 passing percentage for this year's class X exam, the results of which were announced on Monday.

Naveli Arbind Kumar of the Kendriya Vidyalaya (KV) at Bombay Engineering Group (BEG), Kirkee, delivered an outstanding performance with a huge score of 491 out of a maximum 500 marks (98.2 per cent).

Pune: Even as IITs and IIMs continue debating the implementation of 27 per cent quota for OBCs, a private university in Pune has already decided to take the plunge.

The Symbiosis deemed university's decision to voluntarily implement 27 percent OBC quota comes as a relief to many OBC students.
