H1N1 claims 2 more lives, toll 87

PUNE: Two more have people succumbed to the H1N1 influenza in the city, pushing the death toll to 87. While one confirmed H1N1 patient died late
on Monday evening, the throat swab report of another person who died on October 17 came in on Tuesday, testing positive for the flu.

According to Ashok Mehta, joint director of the state health services Sunita Raju Gaikwad (30), a resident of Sambhajinagar, Dhankawdi, died at 6.50 pm on October 17. "Her throat swab report declared the presence of H1N1 virus on Tuesday (October 20)," he said.

PMC launches drive against dengue fever

PUNE: In view of the increased number of dengue fever cases in the city, the Pune Municipal Corporation has launched a fumigation drive
on Tuesday.

"Around 250 health workers have been deployed for tackling the cases related to dengue, said R.R. Pardeshi, deputy health of officer of PMC.

Pardeshi said that the number of suspected dengue cases in the city has reached 134 this year. Out of these, 48 were positive and three people have lost their lives.

Nothing wrong with vaccine -WHO

Sri Lanka has obtained the Rubella vaccine from the Serum Institute of India (Pune), a manufacturer who is in the list of WHO’s pre- qualified manufacturers, WHO Representative to Sri Lanka, Dr. Firdos Rustom Mehta said.

After the death of a girl from Matara last March, the manufacturer got the product tested from the Maharashta Government which proved that there was nothing wrong in the rubella vaccine and it was not substandard, he said.

Two more deaths take swine flu toll to 80

PUNE: With the deaths of a two-year-old girl from Urali Kanchan in Pune district and a 27-year-old woman from Rahuri in Ahmednagar district, the
H1N1 flu toll in the city has risen to 80.

According to Ashok Mehta, joint director of state health services, the throat swab report of Aishwarya Somnath Kotwal (2), a resident of Urali Kanchan, Haveli taluka, confirmed the presence of the H1N1 virus. She died at the Sassoon hospital at 10.10 am on Monday.

'Zagade's claim on H1N1 unscientific'

PUNE: Municipal commissioner Mahesh Zagade's recent claim that the H1N1 flu situation in the city is under control has drawn flak from the
city-based Jan Arogya Abhiyan (JAA) a forum of health professionals and NGOs which has demanded that H1N1 flu cases in Pune should be scientifically analysed and unscientific claims of the outbreak being under control should not be made.

PUNE: Three people, including an undertrial in the Yerawada jail, have died due to the H1N1 flu, taking the toll due

to the infection to 61
in Pune. While Madan Agarwal (41) of Mohannagar in Chinchwad and Dilip Namdeo Mane (51)
of Anandnagar on Sihagad road died on Wednesday, undertrial Maruti Ananda Zargad (60) died on Thursday.

Pune, Sep 20 - ANI: The nine-day festival Navratri is being celebrated as a low-key affair in the swine flu hit Pune city.

Pune witnessed over 50 deaths due to the swine flu in last couple of months.

The festival which started on Saturday and is dedicated to Goddess Durga who is also known by several names such as Chamundeshwari, Parameshwari, and Mookambika among others.

Residents of Pune are celebrating the festival but with precautions. Devotees could be seen with facemasks while going to the Chatushangi Temple to offer prayers.

Swine Flu claims three lives in Pune; toll rises to 52

Pune, Sep 18 (PTI) Three more persons have died of swine flu here, taking the death toll in the viral infection in the city to 52, health officials said today.

The three who died last night in different hospitals were Prabhakar Gawde (38), Naresh Bhatia (35) and Sagar Bhalerao (7), hospital sources said.

In many cases, the test results for the infection were coming after the death of the patients as National Institute of Virology (NIV) was coping with an increasing number of samples.

10 deaths in 3 days throw administration into a tizzy

Pune The last three days alone have accounted for 10 H1N1 deaths in the city. This accounts for 20 per cent of the 54 deaths that the city has seen since Reeda Shaikh’s death on August 3.
