University Grants Commission (i) recognised the institute as a centre of Advanced study in Agricultural Economics in 1962 and later in 1964 as a Centre of Advanced Study in Economics(ii) Established a centre of study of Economics in East European countries in 1977 and (iii) Instituted a chair in Applied Economics at the instance of SAARC in 1988. Reserve Bank of India Instituted a chair in Finance in 1988. Ford Foundation gave endowment grant in 1989 to institute a chair and to establish a section in international economics for research activities in international economics and related subjects and support to the library. The Planning Commission, Government of India, gave an endowment grant to the Institute a chair and a unit at the Institute for promoting Teaching, research and informal debate on all issues relating to planning and development. This Chair is named as "Professor D.R. Gadgil Chair in Planning and Development". Keeping in view the eminence of the faculty, the contribution of the Institute has made in teaching, training and research in Economics, the availability of physical infrastructure and the potential of the Institute, the Government of India, on the recommendations of the University Grants Commission, declared the Institute as a deemed to be a University from May 9, 1993. Courses for M.A.(Economics)and Ph.D. only. The object of the Institute is to conduct research into the economics or and political problems of India and to train research workers in these subjects. The main thrust areas of the institute are agricultural economics and rural development, population studies, input-output studies for planning and development, microecono-mics, macroeconomics,monetary eonomics and finance and the study of economics of East European countries.
