MSEDCL ensures power for CYG

PUNE: The Commonwealth Youth Games (CYG) will have uninterrupted power supply thanks to a war footing operation by the Maharashtra State Electrici
ty Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) that has set up a Rs 3.45 crore infrastructure at Balewadi in six days flat.

While planning for the CYG has been going on for the past two years, the Pune zone of MSEDCL was informed that it will have to take care of the power supply to the Balewadi venue only on September 25 this year.

"The organisers were earlier planning to meet the power requirements with the help of generators, but realised that it would not work. So state energy minister Dilip Walse-Patil and MSEDCL managing director Ajay Bhushan Pandey asked us to create a suitable infrastructure in five days," said S.P. Nagtilak, chief engineer of Pune zone of MSEDCL.

"The daily power requirement of the Balewadi sports complex during the CYG is 9MW. This requirement will be met from Pune's quota of power and no special arrangement has been made to secure additional power. The feeders serving Balewadi will have uninterrupted power supply," Nagtilak said. To facilitate this, a 10 MVA transformer was installed at the Balewadi sub-station.

In addition, as many as nine transformers of varying capacity were installed around the Balewadi stadium. "We had deputed one executive engineer for one transformer each to ensure speedy completion of work," said Nagtilak, adding that 42 mini-feeders were installed inside the stadium complex and another four inside the stadium where the opening and closing ceremonies will be held.

Once that was done, the next job was to lay high-tension electricity cables from the 10 MVA transformer to those inside the stadium, covering a distance of six kilometres. "We started work on September 26 and handed over the fully operational system to the organising committee on October 2. Our teams from Aundh and Baner MSEDCL offices led by 10 executive engineers, two superintending engineers, nine assistant engineers used to work from 7 am to 1.30 am to complete the job," Nagtilak revealed.

To ensure that there is no interruption in power supply during the CYG, as also during the opening and closing ceremonies, a control room has been set up in the stadium which will be manned round the clock by a 10-member team comprising executive and deputy engineers, he said. "Separate teams of engineers and line staff will also be posted at Hinjewadi, Rahatani and NCL substations to take care of any breakdowns. As many as four testing teams will also be kept ready for emergency repairs," Nagtilak stated.

The required material was procured from the head office and MSEDCL store rooms at Kalyan and Nashik, he said. Acknowledging the good work done by the staff at such a short notice, Nagtilak specially mentioned the efforts by acting superintending engineer (SE) of Ganeshkhind circle Madhukar Bhokare; Shrihari Chaudhary, SE Rasta peth circle ; Suresh Valekar, SE Pune rural; engineers Kishor Gorade, Hanumat More, Prafulla Joshi, Devendra Ashtekar and Abhay Kulkarni.
