Pune The much-awaited rains that started at Lonavla and Khandala also caused the first landslide of the season on Monday that claimed a life.
The landslide near Adoshi tunnel at Khandala ghat, on the Pune-Mumbai expressway crushed a jeep, killing one and injuring five others, all of them residents of Girgaon in Mumbai. A six-month-old baby and a five-year-old boy in the jeep were unscathed.
The deceased was identified as Anand Shamrao Lad (47). His wife Suvarna Anand Lad (38), besides Hasubhai Daji Lad (55) Kamala Shamrao Lad (35), Hanumant Kundalik More (41) and his wife Anuradha Kundalik More (38) sustained injuries and were admitted to a hospital.
More’s sons Sanket (5) and a six-month-old baby Samarth were safe. Police said eight members of Lad and More family from Girgaon had gone to the temple town of Pandharpur. After offering prayers to Lord Vitthal, the families were returning to Mumbai when, around 2.30 am, huge boulders fell on the jeep.
More, who was driving sustained injuries along with five others sitting at the back. Anand Lad, who was sitting beside More, was crushed to death. Teams of high safety patrol and Khopoli police rushed to the spot and admitted the victims to a hospital.
Police said that there was heavy rainfall for six hours in Lonavla and Khandala areas on Sunday that triggered the landslide. Assistant sub inspector Narayan Chavan of Khopoli police station is investigating the case.
