The year begins on a musical note for Pune. On January 12, thousands of voices echoed the same song. A Guinness Book record was created on this day in Pune when over 2,000 vocalists come together to sing for a confluence called Antarnaad- a vocal ensemble being held under the auspices of the Art of Living Foundation.
The city,which has ushered in the winter on a musical note for the last 56 years, also witnessed the 57 th Sawai Gandharva music festival. The Sawai Gandharve festival, a cultural feast synonymous with Pt. Bhimsen Joshi, the long-reigning king of Hindustani classical vocal music enthralled classical music lovers.
Antarnaad has had over 2,200 plus trained singers from Lucknow, Mumbai, Delhi and Bengaluru registering for the event that also witnessed bandishein from artists including Pt. Rajan and Sajan, Shankar Mahadevan and Chitra Roy among others.
At the Sawai Gandharva festival this time, a photography exhibition washeld as a tribute to Kirana Gharana vocalists, Gangubai Hangal and Pt Firoz Dastur. It included a parallel session of music masters to help music enthusiasts develop an ear for music. In the past, the Gangubai Hangal, Pt Jitendra Abhisheki, Pt Chotta Gandharva, Girijadevi, Hirabai Badodekar, Pt Vasantrao Deshpande and Ustad Amjad Ali have enthralled audiences. Pt Bhimsen has been regular visitor to the festival.
