The inability of the victim to give her statement meant the police were still unable to work through the inconsistencies of the case

Pune: A Medical report received by the police on Monday indicates a 22-year-old employee of a call centre in the city who was allegedly gang-raped last week did go through the ordeal, the first real progress in the contradictions-riddled case.

The inability of the victim — who regained consciousness some days after the Thursday night incident only to slide into a state of shock — to give her statement meant the police were still unable to work through the inconsistencies between their preliminary findings and the complaint lodged by a male friend of the woman.

“The medical report of the woman have come positive for rape,” Deputy Superintendent of Police Ravindrasinh Pardeshi said. “Now, once the victim records her statement, we will take forward our investigation.”

On Friday, Hansraj Nana Bramhane, who lives in the same building as the victim in Phursungi on the outskirts of the city, lodged a police complaint against unidentified people for the gang rape, saying the victim had told him the culprits were a cab driver and his accomplices. The first information report said late on Thursday the victim received a call from her workplace, the International Business Machine-Daksha call centre, asking her to come to the office.

But the police found no record of office calls on the victim’s cellphone and her roommate also said she had not left home. Meanwhile, doctors at Sassoon Hospital performed an operation on the victim on Monday.
