Pune to get 4 colleges

PUNE: As many as 55 new professional colleges, including four in Pune, will open this academic year across the state.

Proposals for these colleges, which were submitted through the respective universities, were cleared by a high-level scrutiny committee of the state department for higher and technical education in Mumbai. On July 1, the department released the list of these new institutions.

In Pune, all the four new institutions will offer studies in the increasingly popular branches of bachelor of business administration (BBA) and bachelor of computer application (BCA), which fall under the University of Pune’s commerce faculty.

The institutions are: Novel Institute of Business Management at Sant Tukaram Nagar, Nigdi Pradhikaran; the Latur-based Bharat Shikshan Prasarak Mandal’s college at Katraj-Kondhwa road; Mumbai-based Metropolitan Education Society’s college at Vitthalnagar in Hadapsar; and the Dina Education Society’s college at Mohammadwadi, Hadapsar.

Babasaheb Sangle, dean, UoP commerce faculty, told TOI on Thursday that the university had recommended an intake of 80 seats each for these new colleges.

According to Sangle, the number of institutions offering BBA and BCA courses has shot up significantly over the last couple of weeks. "Prior to the proposals, the UoP had nearly 58 colleges, but now the number has reached a little over 100," he said.

What is driving up these numbers is the fact that conventional commerce degree (B.Com) is barely sufficient to get jobs and a stable future these days.

On the other hand, BBA and BCA degrees cater to specialised areas. The BBA is, in fact, seen as a ‘gateway to an MBA seat’ and hence the hype. Similarly, computer applications have gone up significantly across the spectrum of commercial activity. So, the demand for skilled manpower in computers also remains high.

A formal process for granting of affiliation to these new colleges would begin soon. Of the total 55 new institutions, five are in the law faculty while the rest are offering BBA, BCA, BSc (IT), BSc (Computer Science), BCS and diploma in business management (DBM).
