Pune-based media house Sakal group is all set to launch an English daily, Sakal Times, on May 7. The first edition will be launched in Pune. The group owns Maharashtra's number two Marathi daily, Sakal. The group already runs two English dailies Maharashtra Herald in Pune and Gomantak Times in Goa. Abhijit Pawar, the 36-year-old managing director of the group and nephew of Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar, said the group "will do whatever needs to be done to make Sakal Times a national English newspaper brand." The newspaper will have competition from The Times of India, which is said to have a circulation of 2.20 lakh copies in the Pune market. "We assure you that our print run will be as much, if not more, than that of the market leader," said Pawar. However, independent media marketing consultants say that Sakal Times is expected to launch with an initial print run of 1.25 lakh copies for Pune city alone. "Considering that it took ToI nearly five years to touch 2 lakh copies, Sakal Times has set an ambitious target for itself," says an advertising sales expert based in Pune. The Indian Express is said to do about 45,000 copies in the market.
