PUNE: The Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Limited (MKCL) is developing a software to facilitate quality academic and administrative e-services in primary and secondary education systems.

MKCL managing director Vivek Sawant has said that using IT for preparing a new, well-researched and accessible instructional design for education was another priority. "Quality in teaching is a major concern today and the software we've proposed for schools to the state government aims at addressing this worry to a large extent," he added.

Senior officials at the directorates of primary and secondary education here said that there are close to 65,000 primary and 18,996 secondary schools in the state. Almost 70 per cent of these institutions are based in rural areas where purchasing power remains a critical issue.

For instance, problems concerning power, bandwidth, cost of computers or even the scripts of various Indian languages, are more pronounced in the rural areas as compared to the urban settings. Making the e-services for schools accessible at a faster rate to all is another challenge that MKCL would have to deal with, said Sawant.

Going by its 'Digital University' experience, the MKCL, which has its development and operational nerve centre in Pune, is upbeat about the propo-sed school software.

As of now, admissions to professional courses are being conducted online through the MKCL e-services.
