The anti-terrorism squad (ATS) suspects that Students Islamic Movement of India (Simi) "member" Ayaz Khan, brother of Feroze Totla, is a suspected to be the link between mafia and Simi. However, Ayaz’s mother has shot down all the claims saying they are baseless.

"Ayaz is being harassed by the police because he is Feroze’s brother, who was killed in an encounter a couple of months ago by the Anti-Extortion Cell. Ayaz also had some information about the encounter being a fake one," said Ms Saira Yusuf Khan, mother of Ayaz.

According to the mother, in order to avoid any kind of inquiry about the police, a fake case of counterfeit currency is being lodged against him. "Last weekend, when I met Ayaz, he told me that the police is only asking him about the information he has regarding his brother and they are not asking him anything in relation to Simi," added Ms Khan.

This revelation has raised a big question about the police investigation, she said and added that to the public they claim he is a terror suspect, but in custody, something else is being asked of him.

Ayaz deals in sim cards and mobile phones, his mother explained about his occupation. Soon after getting ready at home, he used to go to office and work ceaselessly until night. Ayaz’s colleagues also confirmed that no known person used to come to the shop and he used to spend his entire day in the office. "Then how did he get the time to start attending jihadi discussions?" asked Ms Khan.

"We are against the sects in Islam and many rituals for Feroze’s funeral were also not conducted for the same reason," added the helpless woman. She confirmed that Totla was associated with mafia activities and she had removed him from their residence, but Ayaz has no links with anyone.

She said that Ayaz is being framed in big cases in order to destroy everyone from this family. This is also the opinion of the neighbours and youth of the Bhimpura area of Pune, where the family lives.

"He was very popular in the area and everyone used to contact him if they needed any help with mobile phones. It is impossible and shocking to think that he is capable of such things," said Ahmar Shaikh, a local youth.
