MUMBAI: The Maharashtra State Electricity Board (MSEB) on Tuesday stopped short of completely scrapping the six-hour load-shedding schedule in major cities despite considerable improvement in the rain situation.

The state power utility, however, said it would try to have zero load-shedding in Navi Mumbai, Thane, Mulund and Pune on days additional electricity could be procured from outside Maharashtra.

On Tuesday, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Co Ltd (MSEDCL) said it would undertake load-shedding in the range of 3.45 hours to 7.5 hours depending upon the distribution and commercial losses in the regions concerned.

A B Pandey, managing director of MSEDCL, said cities across Maharashtra have been classified into six groups-instead of four till now-on the basis of average distribution losses. "Cities and towns classified in Group A, due to minimum power thefts and good bill collections, will have only 3.45 hours of load-shedding. Towns with losses of more than 50% will have to face power cuts for 7.5 hours," he said.

Meanwhile, as reported by TOI on August 10, Pandey said Navi Mumbai, Thane, Mulund, Bhandup and Pune would not face any load shedding in case additional power could be purchased from outside at a premium.

"If Tata Power Trading Co Ltd manages to get extra power at high costs from outside, there will be zero load-shedding in Navi Mumbai, Thane and Pune," he said. The three cities need 350 MW to avoid a power cut. They pay between 35 paise and 45 paise per unit as reliability charge to enjoy uninterrupted power.

Industrial power cuts, too, have been brought down from 40 hours to 16 hours due to an improvement in the supply, said Pandey.
